The Essence of Gardening

You plant the seeds.
You mulch
You water.

That is enough

This entry began as a long treatise on managing vs leadership, on influence vs control. It was spawned by a conversation with a dear friend who commented that I seem comfortable trusting people to do things their way, to find their own path. In that long essay, I laid out the reasons and path that led me to this place, and talked about motivation, about trust, about a broader concept of success. It’s stuff some of my more philosophic friends, clients and colleagues have discussed in many a lively conversation.

But as an essay, it was frightfully dull and pretentious. And it really didn’t capture what is essentially, a very simple concept. And so, in rethinking the essay, you ended up with this four line poem.

But trust me, the four lines are far better than the two pages.
