Poem: War and Love

War and Love

Everywhere there are reminders
of the joy and little deaths of love,
gifts and betrayal, joy and pain,

nothing is as simple
or as complicated,

a spiritual warfare
where every shot,
whether marauding or miraculous

goes straight to the heart.

About this poem

This morning I read on another writer’s (Jenna Woginrich) facebook page, these words – “People are always telling me how easy it is for a horse to hurt you. I’m single. Its the people in relationships you should tell to wear a helmet. Those things can kill you.”

And it’s true, relationships can be heartbreaking, or they can lift us higher than the stars. That’s their magic and that’s the adventure.

PS – the picture was taken in the window of the house I used to live in, in Troutville, Virginia.
