Poem: Towards Light

Towards Light

You walk
over the ridge and there
it is,
the sunrise, with the trees in relief
against a faint orange sky.

it has been a cold winter’s wall,
mostly in the dark,
a trek far too long,
far too cold,

unending it would seem,
no landmarks,
no horizons,
no points of reference, or worse
no point of hope;

just the crunch of snow underfoot
and the walking of a path
well worn by others, walking
less in faith or hope
that because you had no idea
what else to do.

And now you are here at the dawn,
uncertain if you can believe your eyes
or whether you are in the midst of a dream
that will taunt you when you wake.

Trembling,
you take a step up the hill,
towards the sun.

About this poem.

Life’s a long journey. Much of it is wonderful. Some of it is scary. When the scary lasts too long, it is sometimes hard to accept that things indeed, are turning around.
