Poem: Trains at Night

Trains at Night

Dusk falls unexpected,
and the journey darkens,
lights, those artificial lights
created for just this occasion
hold it at bay,
but just barely,
and even they
are a reminder
of the falling darkness outside
pressing to find it’s way in.

You’ve made this journey before.
You know the lights will go out,
and the train will darken
except for the small bright light
you carry with you,
a flicker
that helps you see
through the blackness,
though the long night
to the dawn.

About this poem

When we have emotional struggles, sometimes they come unexpectedly. Good counseling helps us find the light to struggle through the rough moments and get to the other side. And there’s always a “other side.”

For my friends, who always worry when they see a depression poem – not to worry. I am fine. This is a memory poem, not a poem of the moment. Life is good. I am living in light.
