Poem: Broken Dawn

023

Broken Dawn

You have never been so alone,
as your eyes rake the treetops
searching for spring, sure somehow
this eternal winter can not last, sure

somehow that this empty place,
where those that love you cannot reach
either because of geography or culture.
it dances mockingly just outside your reach,

just beyond the horizon, coloring your air
but never quite penetrating the empty places
where love has fled, to the skies.

You have never been less alone,
bathed in color,
surrounded by essence and past,
by love that has no boundaries

except the ones we set ourselves,
the walls we erect for safety,
that instead are the worst kind of dangerous,
subversive from within,

never allowing the dawn
that dances
just outside our reach.

About this poem

It has been interesting, this time of mourning and struggle, watching those who would comfort me….. but do not know what to do or say. It’s like a wall.

And it happens not just in these times, but in love, in relationships, all through our lives. What we want is just, just beyond our grasp. Until we allow ourselves to just be.

The picture was taken in Richmond, Va, along the James River. (and, confession time, it’s actually near sunset, not dawn.)
