Poem: Walk with Me

station

Walk with Me

Come walk with me along the tracks awhile.
No, I do not know where they lead
or whether they split somewhere down the way.

I only know that here they take us past the town
we both find ourselves in, past the station
and into the forests where it is cool and dark.

We can rest there, two travelers,
not in a hurry, without a destination
but unwilling to stand still.

About this poem

When I was kid, I used to walk the train tracks near my great grandparents’ home, with my great grandfather, who was in his eighties. Later, my son and walked the tracks near my apartment in Daleville, Va.  It wasn’t about going anywhere, it was about being there together. Life and love are sometimes like that too. A journey, even if we don’t know where, or why. Maybe particularly if we don’t know where or why.

The picture was taken in Cambridge, NY
