Matthew 5:5

It is not what you think.
Certainly not weakness, this choice
you make
to be quiet in the midst of anger,
to wait gently while the war wages
around you.

No, it is a different kind of strength,
rarely recognized,
and only appreciated
by the battered.

About this Poem

One of my readings in the bible this morning was Matthew 5:5, which reads “Blessed are the meek in heart, for they shall inherit the earth.”  One of the definitions of meek, is gentle.

For some, meekness is a personality trait. For others, it is a choice and rarely is the strength behind understood for what it is. But whether recognized or not, there is a strength in meekness, that at times, particularly in times of hurt, loss or stress,
has great value.
