Barbarians Inside the Gates
For centuries, walls
were built,
protection, they said,
from the barbarians,
somehow forgetting
that the barbarians inside the gates
were far more dangerous
far more likely to kill,
to torture those they love
with neglect
and killing words,
with vile acts and
broken promises,
all in the name of the myth
of safety.
About this poem.
The demons within are always more deadly than the demons outside. Always.
Tom

And yet, so often we choose the demons within, because they’re at least familiar, and the world outside those walls can seem so intimidating.
