Poem: Silence

Silence

I need silence.
Focus.
A place where it is safe
to focus my heart
on one, single, thing.

It  need not be magnificent
or sweeping. No,
to be honest, I’d prefer simple.
The holding of a hand.
A perfect cup of coffee.
A song.

I tire of complications,
of rants and breakdowns
and piling on of broken things.
I am weary of subtlety
and clever innuendos.
I am weary of trying to understand.

I don’t need to understand.
Not today.
For I have understood much,
do understand much,
perhaps, far too much,

and none of it brings the peace
of simple things.
Of the moment:
Petting a cat, it’s warm body curled
against your chest in the cold,
A lover’s leaning in as you walk.
A prayer in the night.

Spare me the excitement of the maelstrom.
I need silence.
Focus.
A place where it is safe.
