Poem: The Invisible Warrior

The Invisible Warrior

And suddenly the light retreats.
The darkness closes in
and even though you look the same,
still and quiet, the calmest of souls,
you are in the midst of war
inside yourself,
fighting against the dark,
the dark you know is a lie,
but lives nonetheless,
that threatens nonetheless,
the enemy.

The enemy, storybook like
that only you can conquer,
invisible to all but you,
Implacable, insidious,
capable of murder most subtle,
you raise your sword,
a reluctant hero,
unsung, never the stuff of ballads
or poems,
you raise your sword,
and sorely afraid,
attack the night
inside you.

About this poem

Sometimes you surrender. Sometimes you battle. Most people never notice (and that’s OK, it’s not their battle.)

The picture was taken at Trinity Methodist Church in Springfield, MA. It’s a beautiful church, like someone dropped a medieval chapel in the middle of Massachusetts

  1. What timing, this poem really resonated in me. I feel as though I am battling a dark monster lately. I however will not back down, I am a survivor and have battled before. Sometimes lifes trials prepare us for bigger things I think.

    • It’s a hard thing, I know. I will be in prayer for your battle. And yes, I do think our trials prepare us for better things, but dang it’s hard sometimes!
