Poem: Until You are There

Until You Are There

You have been driving in storms
for hours, for days.
Snow and ice and angry winds
have blown you, rocked
your car, sent you more than once
sliding, but somehow
you have stayed on the road
while others, no worse drivers than you
have fallen to the ditches.

Wisdom would have been stopping,
leaving the road,
halting your journey
and avoiding the furious weather,
and for a time,
you considered it.

But something in you,
a hunger for home,
for the warm arms of love,
of your own place of safety and hope,
kept you driving through the night,
through the killing storm.

And now it is morning,
and there is blue sky.
Yes, there is still ice on the road
and you must travel carefully,
but like a hunting dog at the end of the day,
you sense the journey’s end
there is no stopping you
until you are there.
