Poem: Jailbreak

jail

Jailbreak

The sea is just beyond,
sun glistening on the waves,
calling to you,
calling past the prison that has bound you,
your personal purgatory
of seeing the light,
but never quite,
quite
reaching it.

You breathe.
You breathe again,
and fix your eyes on the horizon.

It is not an unattainable journey.
Others have been there.
Others as broken as you,
as fearful.
Each has taken that first step,
and then another,
slow,
tentative
as if they were afraid of the very light
they yearn for.

You step,
the sand cool between your toes,
the wind from the sea, warm.

You step again,
wondering if this time
you will find the sun
and stay in its heat
forever.

You step
again.

About this poem

We are imprisoned by so many things in our life. Most of them by our own choosing.

The picture was taken at Virginia Beach, shooting through a pier to the ocean.
