Poem: Release

Release

Untie my boat and let the tides take me,
the currents that pull me to the sea.
There is no path, at least none that matters,
save the draw of horizons you cannot yet see
beyond.

Untie my boat and trust the tides to take me,
their ebb and flow much truer than your own desires,
an easier path than the constant struggling
that has been your choice for far, far,
too long.

Untie my boat and let me set sail, not against the tides,
but with them. Believe in God’s paths,
even those that lie beneath you, out of sight in the depths,
and let them carry you where you could never carry
yourself.

Untie my boat and live not here
but beyond, and beyond,
and beyond.

About this poem

I’ve been reading too much Tennyson lately.

The picture was taken on the Eastern Shore of Virginia.
