Road Kill (Ezekiel 37)
And, when the shot has cut through the glass,
and the wreckage is strewn along the roadside,
glistening shards, a bullet hole, perhaps two.
Blood on the seat.
But here is the truth.
Another will come.
And another, for your vile anger can kill.
It can wound and maim,
but like Ezekiel’s dry bones,
God’s breath will not be denied.
About this poem
Yes, the recent massacre in Orlando influenced this. As has watching my kids come back to life over the past few years. As has dealing with my own haters. As has a set of conversations today that touched me deeply. As has the year in politics. As has struggles in my own beloved denomination.
Despite all the recent evidence to the contrary, I still believe in the power of love. In the end, when everything else is destroyed, it is only love that brings life back. Again and again.
Truth.

Not just truth…ultimate truth. Love conquers all.
