Poem: There is Such a Thing

There is Such a Thing

A chair at the desk. Another on the wall. Waiting
for the moment it might be needed.
A simple chest or two.
No more than is needed. No less.
Light. Space. A bit of beauty
to remind you life is not sparse,
but generous and kind,
and that work is worship, no matter
what that work might encompass.

Everyone has a place they worship best.
Nature. Buddhist or Hindu temples.
The church of your childhood.
Cathedrals or country chapels.
A space that takes you to a place of peace
you cannot find anywhere else.

Not a church, but for me, God is found there.
In the simplicity. In the space.
In the sense that there is such a thing
as enough.

About this poem.

The picture was taken at the Hancock Shaker Village near Pittsfield, Mass, It is a place that brings me such peace and I try to go once or twice a year. Never tiring of it. Always refreshed by it.

We live in a world where everyone, people and companies and nations, all feel they need more. My own life has led me to a different experience. There is such a thing as enough, and I have it and then some.

Gratefully,

Tom
