One Phrase
Sooner or later all the talk distills to a single phrase
that says all you need to know.
I love you.
I will love you forever.
You have cancer.
It looks like the cancer is gone.
The cancer has come back.
One phrase.
Will you marry me?
Yes. Or No.
Our paths diverge.
There’s someone else.
We want you here.
You are perfect for me.
One phrase
that swallows all the other words alive
and says all that the other words have been dancing around.
And if you don’t pay attention,
you will miss it.
And the words will be out there.
The truth will exist,
and somewhere down the road, you will finally understand,
a tad late,
and feel more than a bit
dense.
About this poem
Reflecting on my denseness in life. To be so smart, I miss a lot.

There is one sentence there that worries me?
If it is the one about the cancer being back – Don’t worry. I did have cancer. They operated. It did come back. They radiated and chemo’d. But that was years ago. I am nto quite out of my five year window, but all the indications are that they got it the second time around. If it was something else and you want to talk about it. Let me know.
