Poem: Always Capturing

Always Capturing

I am always trying to capture something.
An image. A moment. An emotion.
Trying to capture the elusive,
the hard to quantify, the flicker
as everything passes me by,
A camera. A pen. A keyboard.
All more reliable than my memory,
than my ability to remember.

The heart is always a struggle,
It always has been. Betrayed a time or two
too many. A bit battered,
not always in sync, I capture things
in hopes the heart will some day
catch up.

About this poem

I take a lot of pictures. Now and again, my kids (and the woman I love) will say “There is a poem in that one.” They are almost always right, though often it takes days, weeks, even years for it to emerge.

Regular readers know I process emotions slower than most people. It is not exactly crippling, though it does cause some interesting misunderstandings.

My daughter took this picture. We have taken a lot of pictures together over the years. A fond memory.

From those things, this poem.
