Poem: Always, the Reaching

Always the Reaching

a few not-quite-bolts of cloth, left over,
Carefully saved. Color, texture, Available.
A few drawers of notions. Thread.
A cloth tape measure.
There is work to do.
Clothes to craft.
Soul work that does not measure what is made
by profit or productivity. No timetable.
Each stitch a prayer. A study in perfection,
or at least a reaching.

About this poem

The Shakers (and the picture came from the Hancock Shaker VIlliage in Massichutsitts) believed that work was an act of worship. Each item crafted as close to perfection as possible in an attempt to grow close and honor God.

I understand the thought, though I am not as skilled with my hands. I do my best. Some days that is very good indeed. Some days, I struggle.

But always I reach.
