Poem: A Peek Behind Closed Doors

A Peek Behind Closed Doors

A peek behind the closed door shows you the room
before it is painted, before the art is placed on the wall.

Tape and plaster patches spot the wallboard.
The lights are unfocused. Some might believe

there is nothing to see.

But these are your favorite places, unfinished, in process.
No where near complete, but oh so full of potential

Waiting.

About this poem.

I have a love affair with empty spaces. With people working towards goals and dreams. Or perhaps about this room in a museum, where I went past the “Closed” sign, just to see what was there. Poetry is always about more than one thing.

The photograph was taken at the Virginia Museum in Richmond, Va.
