Poem: An Understanding of Anger

An Understanding of Anger

You are beginning to understand.
How it is this living embodiment of love
broke bad.
How the hypocrisy of his own
finally made his blood boil,
his humanity rise to the surface.
Righteous anger
after being held in for years,
erupted.

About this poem

There’s a long story to this poem, which after writing down, I decided was too much and too wordy. I won’t bother you with. But the end of the story has left me restless. The atmosphere of our nation, of so many churches filled with anger instead of love, politics instead of kindness, nationalism more than peace, has left me with an underlying anger I do not like in myself, and resist. But I wonder at times, in myself, at what point do I break? It’s a real struggle.

The art work is Giandomenico Tiepolo, Cleansing of the Temple. There are lots of paintings of this moment but I chose this one for the expression on Jesus’ face – a combination of anger and madness that he has been driven to this point,
