Poem: Early Morning in the Woods

Early Morning in the Woods

The water, if not still, if not picturesque,
is peaceful, and that is enough.
No one needs. No one here
Except you and your God.

You can unravel. Release.
Something more than mere relaxing.
Something soulful. You can pray, unabashedly
for yourself.

No second-guessing here. No challenges.
Only the warmth of an early spring sun,
the songs of the first birds of the season,
none of which care you are there.

It is cool. Typical this time of year.
but once you stop, and sit, and wait,
the sun soaks in. Warmth comes
not in moving, but in the standing still.

About this poem

Inspired by my favorite bible verse – “Be still and know I am God.” (Psalm 46:10)

As I drove to Salem, NY today to try a new diner there, I passed the Hebron Nature Preserve, I have spent many peaceful hours at the edge of it’s ponds and I was reminded that I have been too busy to get out, do, revive my soul,
Good work, all of it, but still.

Or a poem about the early spring sun. Poetry is never about one thing, even when I try to make it so.

Be well. Travel wisely,

Tom
