Poem: A Remembrance of Light

IMG_2731

A Remembrance of Light

Some days are better than others,
or at least,
less a struggle,

less a climb up dark stairs
that never seem to end,
never seem to find their way

to the light
you can see,
but can’t quite reach.

But that does not stop you.
You climb. Your legs ache.
Your heart aches,

determined, less for yourself
than those who love you,
who deserve your best,

for whom the simple gift
of merely continuing,
of a hard earned smile,

is love.
Your legs churn,
more out of habit

than hope,
a power driven more by faith
than experience,

a remembrance of light.

=================================

Some of you know I battle depression, and indeed some days are better than others. Today was a bad day, and sometimes, it helps to write about bad days. So there you go.

The picture is in the barn of the woman I love.  A former hayloft, we are slowly converting it to an artist’s studio and place to gather friends in warm weather. You can click on it for a larger version.

  1. Thank you Rosana. For me, often writing is part of the path out of darkness. I think that is true for a lot of us who write, particularly poetry. Not that we are always sad or depressed – far from it, but that it is in the writing that things get clarified, that I am freed to move on.

So many fight depression. I’m one of millions and millions and my case is not as bad as many, But sharing it rather than hiding has purpose for me – it’s a way to get it out, a way to let others know they are surrounded by those with this “hidden” disease, and a way to let others battling understand that they are not alone in their battle. Far from it.
