Poem: Ancient History

Stonehenge

Ancient History

The stones have fallen
into a beautiful ruin,
not the same perhaps,
but still, a destination worth visiting,

an eerie magnificence far stronger
and everlasting
than the original,
a touchstone

that sings a new truth,
one that resonates in life and love,
that even in destruction
there is magic.

About this poem

Not long ago, I was talking to a friend about my divorce and she said “It still makes you sad, doesn’t it?”

“No.” I said. “It WAS sad. And I can see the sad things that grew from it. But it is ancient history. The sadness now, all these years later, is more a thing of the mind than a thing of the heart. And something new has grown in it’s place, something new, and unexpectedly wonderful.”

When I saw this picture I took of Stonehenge a few years ago, that conversation came back to mind. and I let my brain dance with the idea until this poem crept out from under the rocks.
