Poem: One Light

ticonderoga engine room 3

One Light

Sometimes one light is enough,
just enough to fend off the dark,
to hold back the demons that lurk just out of sight

and wait for your blind weakness
before devouring you alive.
But one light, be lt love or God or

memory or a stubborn refusal
to surrender, is enough, a mock dawn
an announcement

that even from miles away cries out
“It is safe here. It is warm. and
the victory begins here.”

Sometimes, one light is enough.

About this poem

Here in Vermont, things get very dark very early. But clear across the valleys, a single light changes the flavor of the dark completely. Just as it does in life when things are tough. That one light, that one person, can be the difference between dawn and darkness.
