Poem: The Last Link

deep blue

The Last Link

Release me
to fly
to find the horizon,
the empty sky,
the air.

Release me
from the unwanted chains,
rusted, old and thin
from disuse and neglect

for link by perilous link,
I have broken them
until only the thinnest remain.

And I am left to shatter
the last cruel shackle

and fly.

About this poem

Tell me what binds you: People? Situations? Fears? They all work in this poem. How do I know? I have been bound by them all at different times.

The picture was taken in Newport, RI.
