Poem: From the Outside

From the Outside

From the outside,
the house is bright,
fall flowers still light
the neatly cut flower beds
below each window.

Inside it is dark,
a place of shadows,
sparse and fearful,
gothic, empty of color.

And you can never know
until the moment
you open the door
and walk in.
