Poem: Recovering from Depression

Recovering from Depression

A brush stroke. And another.
A new layer of paint
that never quite covers the old
but creates something new.

About this poem

A reader emailed me this morning, asking if I had ever done a follow up book to my 2016 book Dancing with Depression. He wanted to know if I had said everything I needed to say about my own battle with depression.

The answer to both questions is no. I never did a follow up book or a second edition. And there’s never an end to things to say. I manage my depression well, but that’s what it is, management. It does not cure. You do the work, and you do better, but, like painting layers of color, you don’t erase it, you simply change the texture, change the look of it. And it becomes something new.

Or, a poem about painting (I am going to the studio this morning to paint) Poetry is never about one thing.

Be well, Travel wisely,

Tom
