Poem: Why I Cling to You in the Night.

Salem NY 3

Why I Cling to You in the Night.

The children were right.
There are monsters in the dark,
mad demons we create ourselves

and try desperately to hide,
to stuff in the back closet
and under the bed,

monsters we embellish
with every fear we can conjure.
We feed them in the night,

sure they are growing,
but unsure how large, or
how voracious they are becoming

in the black of night.
Our only saviors
are God and lovers,

the ones who stay with you,
breath of their love the only sound
in the night.

So yes, I cling to you in the dark.
I gain power from the warmth of your soft skin.
Power to survive the night

Power to know
that the creatures I created,
I can kill.

About this poem.

The nights are the worst when you are fighting your own demons. But, and this is very important – while we have to face them down ourselves, we don’t have to do it alone. God loves us. People around us love us.

And if we will let them, they will help us gather our strength for the battle, day after day.

  1. Thanks – such awesome thoughts to start my day! Yes – I most definitely draw my strength from God and my husband and family!
