Poem: Sitting in a Chair on a Perfect Fall Day

Sitting in a Chair on a Perfect Fall Day

I need
nothing.

The air is clear and cool.
My chair is comfortable.
The leaves in the distance have begun to change.
I am surrounded
by beauty.

My children are grown
and I have had the privilege of them then,
and them now.
A surprising number of people care for me.
I have just enough enemies
to know I have lived and stood for things.

I have good work to do,
but so much I cannot stop
and savor.

I have a soft, warm shirt on my back.
and more in my dresser.
I have food. Not something I take for granted.
I have enough reminders of my family history,
but no so many I feel bound by them.

The woman I love,
loves me.

The air is clear and cool.
My chair is comfortable.
The leaves in the distance have begun to change.
I am surrounded
by beauty.
More than I deserve.
Grace. Grace indeed.

I need
nothing.

About this poem

It is a beautiful fall day. Yesterday as my wife and I traveled, it seemed like the leaves changed just in the little time we drove to Massachusetts and back. We talked. Held hands. Sat next to each other. Talked of children and friends.

I have a bit of work to do around the house. Then I will sit in my chair outside.

And just savor.
