Commonplace Mystery
It is a familiar window.
Most mornings you sip your first cup of coffee here.
Most evenings you sip bourbon from the same spot,
eyes over the landscape
you have walked so often.
A familiar window.
a landscape you know and yet,
with a change of weather,
with fog or rain or dark,
it somehow remains
a mystery,
showing just how little
we can know,
just how little
we see.
About this poem
A poem about love and lovers, about our nation, about ourselves – all subject to a change of weather that takes away what we thought we know, and replaces it with… mystery. Poetry is never about one thing.
The photograph was taken in the Hudson River Valley.
Be well. Travel wisely.
