Poem: Psalm 40:1

Psalm 40:1

It is the hardest thing,
this waiting
for the fog to lift, waiting

to discover the paths
you know are right in front of you,
leading to peril or promise, waiting

for your joy to show itself,
promised, certain, yet
invisible in the gray.

About this poem

Psalm 40 was in my devotions this morning. Verse one reads “ I waited patiently for the LORD; he turned to me and heard my cry.”

I do believe in a loving God who cares for us. At the same time, I feel too often that I cannot see his way, or what he wants. I cannot see past the trials. And for me, it is not life’s struggles that are the hardest thing. It’s the waiting.

  1. Thank you, Tom…I needed this today…I have a friend who needs it and I will share it with him. I don’t believe it’s a coincidence. God brings us small graces when we need them.

  2. Yes, Tom Petty said it best, “The waiting is the hardest part”.

Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.

  3. I somehow stumbled across this today…expresses how I have been feeling recently! Perfect and so glad I found this! Thank you!
