Poem: Faith and Wooden Bridges

Faith and Wooden Bridges

Old work. Board on board crisscrossed
in a way that is not done today.

And yet, a hundred and fifty years later
it still stands, this bridge of wood and work,

this survivor of floods and change, still worth
the drive just to see it, half tourist attraction,

half remarkably practical, daily driven
by cars its original builders hardly imagined.

Part of the landscape, hardly given a thought
but vital nonetheless,

not unlike the faith we lean on,
Old work, quaint to some,

but still vital. Still strong.
providing safe passage

while newer things fail.

About this page

About wooden bridges. About faith. About the old ways that are often abandoned for the flashy glitz. Poetry is never about one thing.

The photograph was taken here in Vermont, which has an amazing number of 19th century covered bridges, still used each day,

Be well. Travel wisely,

Tom
