Poem: Grasping the Cornerstone

Grasping the Cornerstone

You fight for stillness
in a world that is not.
a world that does not value quiet,
or understand its power.

Everyone moves to their gate,
checks their list, their calendar, their phone.
eyes down, bodies in motion.
A Bosch masterpiece alive and noisy,

eating its victims from within,
tension like a cancer, a toll
to move you to the next
Set of stairs.

Plant your feet. Resist the wind.
Become one with the earth that birthed you.
What is needed most is your soul,
always in danger of becoming lost in the noise.

Plant your feet. Resist the wind.
And you will live. Grasp the cornerstone that made you
and when all else is blown away,
Your stillness will provide the foundation

to build again.

About this poem

Things are a bit too busy to suit my soul right now. This morning my devotional scripture came from 1st Peter 2: “The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone,“.I have a full day, but come hook or crook, I am going to spend some time in my studio painting. Poetry is never about one thing.

The photograph was taken in one of many airports I have traveled through over the years.
